Students' loans, prospects on chopping block

Right after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and area residents were being plucked from the rooftops of their homes, a conservative talk show host proffered a lesson for poor children.
He said all they had to do was work hard and educate themselves, and they would be able to avoid being left behind on the "metaphorical rooftop."
That always sounds great. Who would disagree with hard work and education being paramount in the lives of those born without a trust fund?
But here's the thing: This week, U.S. House GOP leaders hope to move forward on a budget bill that includes a $14.3 billion cut in student-loan programs. The cut could affect the number of lenders who make student loans as well as the interest rates and fees charged. (full story)
