Allen West offends the Congressional Black Caucus by serving Chick-Fil-A Chicken and Biscuits

Crazy ass Allen West has did it! This fool had the nerve to serve Chick-Fil-A sandwiches and biscuits to the entire Congressional Black Caucus. And they were not happy about it either.

According to HuffPo, he quickly left the room once he served the food.

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) told The Huffington Post that the incident happened about six months ago but is now fresh in his mind given West's recent comments in support of the fast food chain, which is run by a well-known Christian and backer of anti-gay religious organizations. Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy last week sparked a nationwide response from gay rights activists after publicly denouncing marriage equality. 

"We have a rotation in the Congressional Black Caucus where every member provides the lunch one of the weeks when we meet," Hastings said in a Monday interview. The lunches, he said, are often quite delicious. 

"We have fried chicken. And we have catfish and BBQ. We do not have watermelon, although sometimes people will have fruit. We serve a full course meal with collard greens. We have Jamaican beans and rice," Hastings said. But West "sent Chick-fil-A with biscuits. Ok?" 

"That was an 'in your face.' Every member of the Congressional Black Caucus that was there was offended," he said.

Lord, Allen is a hot sizzling ass mess. I hope he's voted out soon.

Antoine Dodson says Gays are being the Bullies

Antoine! Goddammit! This misguided man went on some right-wing radio show to talk about being bullied over eating at CFA.

I don't know why he went on a show that basically hates him, but who knows. This is what was said on the Birmingham, Ala. radio station 100 WAPI’s “The Matt Murphy Show”:

 A lot of people from the gay community was actually telling me not to eat at Chick-fil-A and then you know, I started having these flashback because I started believing like, the gay community — we have went from being bullied to becoming bullies,” he said. “And I don’t think that that is fair because I’m like, aren’t we like in America, like we have freedom of speech. We have the freedom to put our money wherever we want to. That’s what America stands on. So how can we just go after this group, you know — go after this company so viciously because they don’t believe they have the same rights as us. I don’t think it’s fair and I’d don’t think it’s American.”

Dodson said that by staging such a protest, gays were feeding stereotypes about the gay community and pushing some people away.

Dodson, who participated in the Chick-fil-A appreciation day, criticized the whole premise of the Chick-fil-A boycott and said that the boycott was doing little to champion the gay community’s cause.

“Just like the boycott, I think it’s tacky because you don’t have to go to Chick-fil-A and kiss on every person you see, that’s a man if you’re a man, just to try and get a point across,” he said. “You can go about it in a completely different angle. I just think it is getting really, really ridiculous.”

Antoine is wrong about the purpose of the battle. The purpose was to call out where their money goes to and who they support; which are Hate Groups that pushes bigotry and murder. However, there are some parts I agree with. 

The Kiss-Ins are ridic. They were pointless and pushed more shock value than anything. Also, we need to articulate the message better. When folks are confused about why we're out there then somewhere, there's a disconnect.

This was not our best moment.

This is what it sounds like, when Gay Activists Cry

One of my final posts on Chick-Fil-A is in Bilerico Project. In that post, I said that we got lost in the messaging, therefore losing control over the whole Chick-Fil-A affair.

There were mixed responses, some agreed and disagreed with me. And that's fine, but one response kind a rubbed me the wrong way.

Some activist said:

However, I simply feel that people with access to popular blogs should maybe think twice before they disparage the actions of others in the community. Offer your OPINION, of course (and state it as such), but please do not dismiss the work of others from your keyboard. Do you have any ideas? TELL US, but blatantly criticizing the work of activists is incredibly dispiriting to those of us on the streets.

I was nice in my response on BP, but on my own blog I'm going to give real talk. If she thought I was harsh and disparaging, then I have to question her activism. What I said was minor compared to what other bloggers said about the CFA debacle.

I pointed out how we got lost, but at the same time celebrated our success in bringing attention to CFA's messy actions. But that was too much or in her words, incredibly dispiriting to those of us on the streets.

Child please, if I broke your spirit, then you're not ready. My feedback and criticism was meant for us to think closely about our actions. Where did she get this hook-ripping review I supposedly wrote? The funny thing is, this isn't the first time certain activists get all weak and whiny. I've seen many times how some activists complain about others' views of them. Well, I have this to say... Get over it.

This is a battle and if you can't handle criticism, feedback or real talk, then get out of the way and let the real bitches walk the floor. The haters will always attack us with everything they got. We have to be tougher, but also wiser; and when we get feedback or real talk... F**king listen to it! Don't hate on it or come down on it. Just listen, who knows it could be helpful.

My goodness, sometimes I truly worry about our movement. But I guess that's what keep things interesting, right?

Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day was a Success, Now what's the Next Step? (This is the Final CFA post)

I said I was done on the Chick-Fil-A drama, but with the success of their national Hate Day, it makes me wonder if we are ready for this battle.

We need a better game plan if we're continuing this fight.

Why I'm Done talking about Chick-Fil-A

Okay, y'all.... I'll be honest. I'm tired of the Chick-Fil-A chatter. Ever gay blog has talked about this 12 times over already, so I'm done for awhile.

We all know they give to hate groups and we know they are not changing their minds about it, so what more can we say?

Action is the bigger tool to use. If there are national protests and store closings, then we know something is happening and things are moving forward. So once we see some "Tear Down This Wall" progress, I'm keeping the parodies, GLAAD ads, connection to hate groups charts, news-not-news stories off the blog. It's just becoming sludge in drain, clogging up other issues we could be dealing with.

For example, if we could take all this energy move it towards ENDA, we might get something going.

Different views of the Chick-Fil-A Mess

Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans, R. Clarke Cooper provided an interesting view to the Chick-Fil-A drama.

He said:

"Turning a chicken sandwich into Public Gay Enemy Number One makes LGBT people look superficial, vindictive and juvenile -- everything that we as a community have worked hard to overcome. Remember, employers don't want drama queens on the payroll, military service is serious business, and marriage is not a right society grants to spoiled children. While in a perfect world our equality should not depend on our good behavior, in a world where our rights too often hinge on political reality, the way our movement conducts itself matters.

"The 'movable middle' moves both ways, and they don't like seeing people attacked relentlessly for their religion. Whatever the nuances, these voters see a man standing up for his beliefs against a politically powerful mob dead-set on driving him out of business. It's un-American, and when fellow conservatives are finally standing up and speaking out for marriage equality as consistent with the sober values of responsibility and commitment, splashing a popular American company with metaphorical chicken blood in protest is nothing less than friendly fire."

Hmmm. Interesting, but he's not alone. My friend Sean also had a strong response:

I see little evidence that the damage done to the Chick-fil-A brand is as severe or permanent as some would like. Every time a new gay marriage referendum comes up and is voted down, it ends up demonstrating how rampant this kind of gay-positive groupthink is. Most Americans probably don't have very strong opinions about the whole controversy.

There is also a tendency in gay politcs/media/activism to overrate the degree to which LGBT civil rights battles are fought within the realm of pop culture, and this is that "superficial, vindictive and juvenile" faction that Cooper is referring to. Sure, visibility has always been an important factor in the movement, but it's not the only one. The theory has always been that if you use consumer culture and pop cultural allies to increase the visibility of gay people, you will change the broader public's view of them and that will cause policy changes. (Has anyone asked Lady Gaga what she thinks about this yet?) But if you look at the history of most civil rights movements, you'll see that this is really a two-way street. In fact, it's often the case that public policy changes come first, which lead to social changes later. Fighting for rights in court rooms and legislative chambers may not be as glamorous or exciting as talking about a fast food chain everybody's heard of, but it's much more effective at improving people's lives in the long run.

Mike Huckabee wants to support and protect Chick-Fil-A from us mean people. So he has created "Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day.”
